The reason why you hate-read something
Oh, hi friends!
This was a rare event, but I was hate-reading something this week. Do you ever do that? You’re reading and can’t stop and yet aren’t enjoying it and aren't enjoying yourself and can’t stop and you’re thinking about how untalented this writer is and wondering why it was even assigned and why it was even written and why are you even continuing and you can’t stop, and why can’t you just click the X to leave the page, why can’t you click the X, why can’t you—
And then you realize you’re not hate-reading.
You’re just mad at yourself for not doing your own work.
“But it wasn’t easy to get someone to hand him a project. Some people told him that he was an actor and nothing else. Even in acting, people would just try to cast him in roles that were exactly like the ones he’d just played. People don’t really know how to look at a person. “Because you’re like, ‘I have these big dreams, and I feel these things.’ Is that all wrong? Like, shame on anybody that’s going to tell you who you are. That angers me. It’s like, someone’s going to tell you who you are, what you’re capable of. Like, what?” Then he pitched “A Star Is Born” to Warner Bros., and whatever happened in that room made the Warner people hand over $38 million before marketing costs.
That’s why you have to believe in yourself, he decided. That’s why you can’t let people tell you who you are. They aren’t even trying to be malicious. They just truly believe that each person gets one dimension.”
I remember when everyone was laughing about Bradley Cooper directing a remake of A Star Is Born. Boy, is he getting the last laugh. Can’t wait to see it this weekend. This Taffy Akner profile gets into—or tries to get into—the head of the director and star. Well, Lady Gaga is the star. Who is born. But you know what I mean. (h/t Heath Brockwell)
And I'm telling you…I’m not going.
