A tale of two opportunities
Oh, hi friends!
There are two experiences I thought about yesterday.
First one: I was in college and heard about this student group called Campus Events Commission. They were taking applications for Films staff — basically you worked with studios to program sneak previews of movies on campus, which were extremely popular and fun and sometimes you would wrangle celebrities to come, too!
I desperately wanted to be on CEC. This was my destiny. So I stayed up all night perfecting my application. Literally all night. I probably put more effort into those pages than most of my essays.
Then I got an interview, got on staff, made lifelong friends, and CEC was the defining activity of my college life.
Second experience: Years ago, I heard about a job from a friend of a friend. I applied and was sent an edit test. This usually entails editing some raw copy and coming up with story ideas based off the news. They take a good chunk of time and effort. The edit test sat in my inbox for a day. Then another day. By the third day — the day it was due — it had morphed into this looming dark cloud of anxiety and fear.
The big question: If I couldn’t stomach a few hours of working on the test, how would I feel my first day on the job?
Some challenges you want to run toward. Others you want to run from.
Who knows, maybe I could have done the test, gotten the job, made great friends, and found my true calling!
Except that’s usually not how things work.
If the intention isn’t there — if you’re not running toward it — then maybe it’s not right for you.
And that’s OK. Don’t let someone convince you otherwise.
Save your energy for the moments, the people, and the opportunities that you really do want.
