The deliberate summer
Oh, hi friends!
Happy two full days into summer.
Since the season is going different this year — no Mets?! — I’m falling back on an idea Gretchen Rubin shared a few years ago.
She calls it “designing your summer” — she picks a theme or long project and starts her summer with purpose. (One year she read a lot of Proust!)
This is comforting, in a way. It’s not about goals, but rather creating a sense of continuity. So you can come out the other side able to say, “Alright, I know where summer went.”
You could have a summer of learning. Of listening. Of speaking up. Of being OK with being uncomfortable. Of compassion.
A summer of being outdoors more. Of putting down your phone. Of getting healthy. Of making a big move. Of taking chances.
Or you could have a summer of ice cream!
Wouldn’t it be nice to think about this now, before summer is over?
Design your summer now, before your summer sets.
“On the flip side, the most important lesson he unintentionally taught me is not to wait to do the things you love. For me, that’s been to travel, to see family, to create memories, to take in the beauty of the world — a great reminder of just how lucky we are to be alive.”
I love this piece written by my dear friend Jane Frye for Father’s Day. (Sidenote: Now she has me wanting to go to Alaska, too!)
Hamilton was supposed to get a theatrical release but instead is coming straight to Disney+ on July 3. Oh wait, that’s...soon! Here’s the first trailer, released last night. See you there...once I figure out how to get Disney+.

Thanks, as always, for reading.
