Conquering an unexpected deadline
Oh, hi friends!!
It was Wednesday at 5pm. I told myself, “Well, why don’t I get a head start on that application due Friday?”
The deadline had been on my calendar for months. I’d prepared a few sets of lyrics and mp3s, but still had other work to gather.
I logged onto the site and saw something very scary.
The application wasn’t due Friday. It was due today. And not at midnight. But at 6pm.
In one hour.
I must have accidentally moved the deadline on my calendar.
Whoops.
So I freaked out for 30 seconds and then…
Well, I gathered the rest of my materials, wrote up context for new songs, converted Google Docs and Final Draft files into PDFs, renamed everything, turned .wav files into mp3s, and submitted with five minutes to spare.
Not my finest hour, but not my worst either.
When they announce the winners in seven months, I’ll at least have my hat in the ring.
Plus, now I have all these songs and lyrics ready to go for other purposes.
So I learned two things: Triple check the deadline, and push when you have to push.
You can go faster than you think you can.
I love Andrew Bui’s photos! He continues to capture the city right now. Follow him on Instagram @andrew.bui for many incredible food photos, too.
A Round-Up of Things You Might Like
Have you been following the tale of the five orphaned Mallard ducklings in Central Park? Their mother was killed by a snapping turtle (!) but they were rescued by park rangers and are now chilling at the Wild Bird Fund!!
The 10:11 Club is still going strong. (Today I wrote the newsletter at 10:11 since I didn’t have time yesterday — we biked to the city for my third dental appointment so I could get my temporary crown! YAY!!) Thanks to Brass Ring reader and One Big Day founder Bruce Grierson for writing about the 10:11 Club and how it’s going over here.
ICYMI: I’m christening this “follow-up Friday.” If you have something nagging you right now, follow-up! Here’s how.
Sheep loves to play ball with his mom. Today I am the sheep and the ball is every distraction that comes my way.
Finally, open a new window. (h/t Matt Nulty — we’ll get back to theater one day!!)
