Your instincts
Oh, hi friends!
Your instincts haven’t gone anywhere.
They might be hiding. They might be dormant. They might be pushed aside for another priority right now.
But if you do have a moment, you can pick up the pen, open the doc, crack that book, teach that student, and remember.
Despite everything, your instincts are still there.
In the Room of a Thousand Miles
I like writing about where I am,
where I happen to be sitting,
the humidity or the clouds,
the scene outside the window —
a pink tree in bloom,
a neighbor walking his small, nervous dog.
And if I am drinking
a cup of tea at the time
or a small glass of whiskey,
I will find a line to put it on.
You can read the rest of this Billy Collins poem over at Poetry Foundation (a site I always mean to scroll more when I have a free moment, too bad my fingers always find Twitter instead…but maybe, maybe today they will go elsewhere).
We were supposed to see the new musical The Visitor last week at the Public Theater. But if we can’t be there in person, this new song, "Heart In Your Hands," by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey and featuring Ari'el Stachel and David Hyde Pierce (yes, Niles!) is a nice treat instead. (Thanks to Florencia Iriondo for sending it over!)
PS — If you need help focusing in the morning, please join me and my brother Eric for the 10:11 Club — every weekday morning at 10:11am ET (or whatever time zone you're in!), we're starting our day together and working toward one goal until noon. See you there!

Thanks, as always, for reading.
