I hear these five things on a loop
Oh, hi friends!
What are some things you say—or think—a lot?
Here are mine:
- Be magnanimous.
- Always make the more interesting choice.
- Always take the meeting.
- Always ask for more money.
- Everything happens for the best.
These have (kind of?) never failed me. At least not yet.
But the only reason I wrote them down was because I was interviewed by the wise and generous Sinclair Ceasar—and he got me thinking about my work in completely new ways. Read our interview to hear about how I practice self-care (um, it involves the dentist, as you well know), how my brother describes me on my worst day (LOL), my advice to writers, and more.
But beyond that, I hope his question makes you think about your own mantras/sayings/things you think a lot, and how they came to be.

Right now, are you walking towards the escalator, riding halfway up the escalator, or standing at the top of the escalator?
What A Director Should Say To An Actor After Saying Cut
Acknowledge the work. Say “thank you, very good.” Avoid adjustments or feedback that sound critical. Interrogate the character and get their actor brain moving.

PS — For all my current and former Daily Beast staffers (or anyone who wants to donate!)
if you haven’t seen already, Elena needs our help! This woman works tirelessly around the spotless IAC offices and even though I haven't worked in that building for five years, every time I return she still greets me (and everyone!) with “Hello, my sweeties!” Please consider donating to her GoFundMe to help her and her daughter. Thank you.
