Um, that will be *how* much?!
Oh, hi friends!
The most ridiculous thing happened last week.
I went to my wonderful dentist for a cleaning after five years away. Whoops! (If this inspires you to make a long overdue appointment, I’ll be glad!)
Anyway, turns out I have a few cavities, so after making my follow-up appointments, I asked the woman at the front desk for an estimate of how much the fillings would cost.
She said the total would be $7,500.
I laughed and was very confused and jumped on the subway home.
But my wheels started turning. How could I make $7,500? What would that look like? Maybe I could get a job with dental insurance? Maybe I could reach out to X or Y for some new assignments? Maybe I could start that side business? Or…maybe I’ll just eat peanut M&Ms for breakfast every day and let these cavities engulf my entire mouth?
Then I did two seconds of Googling and realized I’m a dumb-dumb. Fillings do not cost $2,000 each. I called my dentist and they said it would be around $750. Not seven thousand five hundred dollars.
Oh.
But…what an interesting lesson, I thought. When it became necessary—when I was suddenly struck by a new goal—I had innovative thoughts about making extra money.
It’s so easy to keep operating in the same gear. What would it look like if you had to turn it up just one notch?
“I was born to write, but I was also born to build brands and this realization often created tension between the two worlds I inhabited. Book friends were astounded to discover that I command a six-figure salary while marketing friends held up my book and said, you wrote this? Wow, I didn’t know you were a writer.
It’s possible to be more than one thing. Few realize this simple, true fact.”
This is so comforting. Lots of wisdom in how to write a full-length book when you have a full-time life. (h/t Nina Semczuk)
