The truth about networking
Oh, hi friends!
I’ve been trying to meet and talk to more theater artists lately, and I’ve noticed something that happens every time…
Not only do I absorb (quite frankly, steal) their energy for their own projects, but I inevitably learn one or two or a dozen things I didn’t know before.
They mention a theater company, I say, “What’s that?”
They say the name of a writer, I say, “Who’s that?”
They talk about a new play, I say, “When is it?”
And a short meeting builds a bigger foundation of knowledge, little bricks laid one by one.
That’s what I get out of “networking.” I don’t necessarily want anything specific from them, but meeting people helps to expand your knowledge of what’s out there.
You’re not collecting business cards, you’re building a network of ideas.

“I think that it's really important to think about money and business as an artist….I made the mistake growing up of thinking I just want to be creative and if I think about business too much that means I'm a sellout. But as I got older I started to realize, if I'm smart and I sort of back into smart financial models, it's actually going to support my dreams — be they as an artist or someone trying to do a startup or any business.”
I admire Mark and Jay Duplass so much. Mark breaks down the financials of being a creative person who’s also business-savvy in this interview with CNBC.
This guy Levi Allen, an adventure documentarian, wanted to run with Casey Neistat (he's a YouTube vlogger and avid marathoner). He set the goal back in April and trained and trained...
And guess what? After a few months, he finally ran with Casey!
I really like this as an example of picking one discrete goal, sticking with it, and making it happen. Maybe the idea of training for a race wouldn't have appealed to him, but tying his goal to someone he admired—and an outcome he really wanted—allowed him to see it through. Thanks to my former Tasting Table colleague Margaret Lunetta for sending me these!
