Where were you one year ago?
Oh, hi friends!
A friend of mine got a big job this week. (Yay!)
And I’ve been thinking a lot about something she said over email…
A year ago, I couldn't have done this, and what inspires me is how much can change in a year. In a GOOD way.
I replied to her…All the jobs before this one led you here.
Look back at this time last year. What were you doing? How far have you come? A year can feel both long and short, you know? Go back a few more years. What seemed challenging five years ago you can probably now do in your sleep.
Ten years ago I graduated from college in LA. Right now I’m…writing a newsletter to you from Brooklyn.
Life’s crazy!
You’ve done a lot over the years. I hope that gives you faith that your future self can do a lot more, too.
“When I’m trying to make a tough choice, I say to myself, ‘Choose the bigger life.’”
As someone who struggles with indecision a lot, I love this reminder from Gretchen Rubin. Which of your options leads you to a bigger, fuller life?
Other questions she asks herself when making tough decisions:
— Is this decision likely to strengthen my relationships with other people?
— Does this decision help me to follow my personal commandment to Be [insert your name here]?
— Is a particular course of action allowing me to expect more from myself—meaning it’s scary in a positive way, that will allow me to grow? Or does this course of action mean I’m not accepting myself—meaning it feels wrong for me in a way that I should respect?
— Do I feel energized or drained by these options?
Feel like I need a poster of all of these on my wall! Read all of Gretchen's advice here.
What are you doing this weekend? I’m going to see my friend’s movie! Careful Not to Cry, written and directed by Erik Sutch, is screening in Greenpoint on Sunday.
Claire is an abortion doctor living in a post-industrial America where football no longer exists, but TRAP laws still do. After restrictive state regulations force Claire to shut down her clinic, she drives a taxi while waiting to reopen. The senator who was instrumental in passing the legislation dies in her backseat, and his wife and daughter come out of the woodwork and into Claire’s life.
