I almost didn’t get the interview
Oh, hi friends!
I wanted to interview a celebrity-famous-person guy for a story.
Looked up his site. Found a contact form.
It gave a little warning—said “he’s not available until the fall.”
I almost clicked off the page. Not gonna happen.
And then…why not? What do I have to lose?
I submitted my message. Done.
His assistant emailed today.
I’m talking to the celebrity-famous-person guy on Monday.
He is available. He just put up a filter, like we all do.
So don’t be dissuaded.
Try anyway.
What do you have to lose?
“Sedaris’ performances are essential to his craft. During his years at the Art Institute of Chicago, he reveled in the laughs he would get from his fellow students during workshops. These days, he reads essays aloud on tour, marks down the audience’s reactions to certain sentences, returns to his hotel room to revise the story and then adjusts the delivery the next night. He read each of the essays in Calypso onstage at least 50 times before the book was published. He loves performing for an audience and even schedules tours when he doesn’t have a new book to promote.”
I’ve always loved David Sedaris. Of course, what makes his writing sound so effortless is the result of quite a lot of unseen effort. Good to read in this TIME interview that he revises each story 50 times. Wow.
Two Things of Note
The Daily Beast is looking for a full-time, NY-based commerce writer! It’s funny…I haven’t worked there in over five years (!!!), but will forever have a soft spot for the old Beast.
And by the way…one of my talented friends is looking to go freelance with her publicity and branding business. She has experience in the publishing, advertising, and small business spaces. She's super talented, 100% a people person and connector, and loves taking small businesses and authors to the next level. Reach out to me and I'll put you in touch—trust me, you want to meet her.
Do you like these daily emails? Please share with a friend!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
Love, Kara
