When everyone ghosts you
Oh, hi friends!
Nothing’s personal.
When that editor who asked for story ideas disappears…it’s not personal.
When that guy or gal you hit it off with doesn’t text you back…it’s not personal.
When that hiring manager who was obsessed with you stops responding…it’s not personal.
When that friend doesn’t reply to your text…it’s not personal.
Maybe it’s annoying or rude or frustrating or aggravating or crazy-making or depressing, but rarely—seriously, almost never—is it personal.
Everyone has their stuff going on. Don’t freak out if you’re ghosted. Follow up if you want. Or don’t.
But remember, even if you can’t control whether someone responds, you do get to control the emotions you have during the gaps of silence.
Nothing is personal…except the emotions you bring to it.
“Anything you make – a podcast, a book, a TV show, a business, really any endeavor that you undertake – is not just the thing it is, but it’s also an engine that powers, directly or indirectly, other things and other people. And that’s more true the more success you have."
From this Linda Holmes piece. Because what you do lives beyond the pixels on the screen. (h/t )
"As you leave here today and everyday going forward: Don’t just ask yourself, What do I want to do? Ask yourself: WHO do I want to be? Because the most important thing I've learned is that what you do will never define you. Who you are always will."
I have a soft spot for commencement speeches. Great one here by Abby Wambach. (h/t Val Pholpituke)
