When you’re too ‘busy’ to think about the future
Oh, hi friends!
It has been a busy week!
Busy isn’t the best word. Full. Let’s say full.
And that should be a good thing. It is. But. But.
With all that fullness, it’s easy to lose sight of the things that will matter a year from now. Five years from now. The Future Things.
It’s so easy to get distracted. To let the hours pass. To crawl into bed again and think, “Well, I guess I’ll get to it tomorrow.”
Tomorrow’s here! So let’s focus on the Future Things. The little steps that will take you up the mountain. Usually they don’t even take that long. They’re just not as urgent as everything else.
So, I’m gonna trick my brain by repeating this over and over again—they are urgent. Tomorrow’s here. Tomorrow’s today.
“Before sitting down to write this, I: washed dishes, scrubbed down my stovetop, took out the garbage and recycling, put new bags in the garbage and recycling bins, organized the stack of unread books on my desk by the expected likelihood of me eventually reading them, organized the cup of pens on my desk, took my dog on a walk around the block, and poured myself a second cup of coffee. Now I’m here, typing whatever, just to get to the next sentence. Will this be the best article I have ever written? No. But it doesn’t have to be. It just needs to be done, so I can say I’ve accomplished something today.”
Oh, look! This writer Katie Heaney is in my brain! And I love it! But her trick?
“Just write 500 words, and then stop. Until tomorrow.”
Five hundred words is doable. Being done is doable. So let’s do it!
She works hard for the money. AND SO DO YOU. Give yourself a pat on the back.
