When you can’t decide between two A+ options
Oh, hi friends!
You know I’m all about choosing, simplifying, saying no to things that don’t serve you.
But what happens when you’re faced with two equally compelling options? Things you actually want to do?
Two good assignments due on the same day…
Making plans with friends on the same Saturday…
A once-in-a-lifetime trip in the middle of a busy work stretch…
My typical response is: How could I possibly do everything?!
But instead of agonizing, I’ve been asking myself: Why not both? What would that look like instead?
Usually, it is possible to have your Brooklyn blackout chocolate cake and eat it too. You might have to twist some deadlines or be more strict with your time. It might involve being a little more creative, but if you really want both options, and decide to choose both options, your life magically starts to expand accordingly.
Why not both?
“If creativity is self-expression, then every idea is a chance to move deeper into yourself. And that’s the journey I’m interested in. So each project, whatever it is — a book, a conference, a podcast, a movie — just feels like a new opportunity to learn, to explore, and to play. Of course, you have to spend some time on marketing and PR and those sorts of things if you want the project to reach an audience, but for me the real joy is in the journey from idea to reality. And once the project is shipped, the question is: ‘What do I want to explore next?’”
This interview with Jocelyn K. Glei speaks to me this week. Instead of feeling guilty over dabbling in different creative pools, it seems so much, um, healthier, to consider them opportunities to learn and explore.
!!!TWO PLAYS THIS WEEKEND!!!
Boy oh boy, are my friends talented or what? As you look to the weekend, here are two must-see plays to add to the mix.
Void
By Katelynn Kenney
Directed by Benjamin-Ernest Abraham
Helen, an aspiring actress stuck in her hometown, stumbles upon a stranger’s suicide attempt in her own bedroom. And Joan, suicidal Filipino folklore enthusiast and self-proclaimed relative, knows that Helen is at a fork in the road herself. The journey of these two women weaves a tightening loop of destiny and choice, of death and revival.

Cannibal Galaxy: A Love Story
A new play by Charise Greene
Directed by Jenn Haltman
It’s business as usual at the Washington D.C. Science Museum where the employees’ personal lives keep getting in the way. Jo wants a child but is unable to secure an inseminator. Chet longs to make love, but dating kinda sucks and gaming is way more awesome. Claire searches for purpose by digging directly toward the center of the earth. Vadim prioritizes the needs of others but wouldn’t know his own if they crawled into bed with him. Eloise lives in a treehouse and brushes her teeth with space particles. When chaos ravages a perfectly average day, these co-workers are flung into a cosmic galactic shift, rearranging their internal cartography. In these desperate times, Cannibal Galaxy: a love story is a new play about how we keep breathing as America eats itself alive.
Dates: June 13 at 8pm, June 14 at 8pm, June 15 at 8pm, June 16 at 3pm and 8pm, June 17 at 3pm
