That tortoise vs hare life
Oh, hi friends!
How do you tackle a big, far-away deadline?
Usually, I have this incredibly smart response...I wait for it to sneak up on me—until it’s maybe, say, one week away. Any earlier and I’m consumed by other obligations.
But when it’s one week away, I finally give myself permission to think about it. When it’s really close, the Panic Monster arrives…and then I stay up all night or write 15 pages a day or let the dishes pile up in the sink because I need to focus on The Most Important Deadline.
I would like it not to be this way. It’s insane. But also…am I really going to change?
Instead of pretending to be a tortoise, an easier solution is to make these sprints as easy as possible by anticipating and preparing for them. Even in the madness, I need to make sure I hit the trifecta: Sleep! Healthy food! Sanity checks with friends!
Knowing a sprint is coming makes the balancing act...tolerable. Until the next time!
"Optimism is an essential ingredient for innovation. How else can the individual welcome change over security, adventure over saying in a safe place?"
From The Man Behind the Microchip: Robert Noyce and the Invention of Silicon Valley, quoted in How Google Works.
I used to wonder why I read so many business, psychology, and leadership books. And then I thought, “Meh, it’ll all make sense one day,” and kept turning the pages.
I love old-school soul and Leon Bridges is the modern master. His new single “Beyond” is a beaut. A YouTube of the audio track and here it is on Spotify.
Anyone Want to Move to Paris for the Summer?
My friend Sara Lieberman is looking for an apartment swap! She is looking to move to a one-bedroom/studio/loft somewhere in Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan in exchange for her one-bedroom in Paris's 11th arrondissement, from July 1-26. If you’re interested, email her at me@saralieberman.com
And Anyone Want to Cook for the Summer?
Sara is also looking for a chef (or recent culinary graduate) to cook with her two days a week (including Saturdays) as part of a new street-food start-up debuting at Smorgasburg at the end of June through Sept. 1. So cool! Interested? Email her at hello@cupocockles.com
