You feeling this Friday?
Oh, hi friends!
How’d your work week shake out?
Perfect? Great!
Not perfect? Also great—we’ve got one more day to go. Let’s do something about that.
Send the email, close the loop, take a nap, sprint to the finish. Do what you gotta do.
I definitely had peaks and valleys this week, which I’m accepting. But definitely more peaks than last week?
And that’s all you can really hope for, you know? The ability to keep climbing a little more each week.
“We are creatures who need to make.
Because existence is willy-nilly thrust into our hands, our fate is to
make something—if nothing else, the shape cut by the arc of our
lives.”

An amazing short film for your lunch break.
This week’s favorite bit of advice: “Don’t take creative notes from discouraging people or professional note-givers.” More wisdom on how to make a feature film in 2018 by Jim Cummings, whose short film Thunder Road (seen above) is exceptional. (h/t Brother Eric)
Do you have a longform crime story that needs a home? Or a really good, juicy pitch? Let me know and I can connect you with editors looking to assign for a new vertical!
My friend Anne Roderique-Jones wrote a fun and thoughtful piece on what she learned when she stopped texting and started calling her friends on the phone. (With a quote from yours truly, a phone call convert!)
How Janelle Monáe Found Her Voice. Up-close look at a brilliant artist. (h/t Heath Brockwell)
Why is it so hard to be honest? My piece for Shine on how to be more radically candid with each other.
How to achieve your 10-year plan in the next 6 months. Benjamin P. Hardy sure knows how to write a headline! (Let’s pretend the main quote doesn’t come from Peter Thiel.) (h/t Charlotte Maiorana)
This is so beautiful! Every office space should be designed by Kelly Robinson. (I interviewed her about her creative process last year!)
I really liked this profile of Chris Mocko, who left the tech world to become a full-time trail runner.
And finally, Jasmine E. Harrison was accepted to 113 colleges. Ah-wha?!
Do you like these daily emails? Please share with a friend!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
Love, Kara
