How to get where you need to be
Oh, hi friends!
I’ve been a bit stuck on a few projects. I’m excellent at writing drafts and letting them rot on my desktop. If this MacBook Air had a scent, it’d be a Eau de Landfill. IT’S THE TRUTH.
Anyway! I finally figured out the gap. How to get from here —> to there.
I like repeatable processes (like, hi, this newsletter I’ve been writing for 274 days). What I needed was a writers’ group that shames me into producing, engaging, and revising.
So I said that out loud to myself, or to the universe, or probably just to Porg.
And within a few weeks, I found two of them. Or let them find me.
I think that’s an important part of getting to the next step.
First you have to define the gap—what is missing? What do you need?
And then, simply, ask.
“You need to constantly be in do mode. I see you out there overthinking your content and agonizing over your decisions, taking forever to make up your mind. Your confidence slows, and you’re worried people will call you a loser if you make the wrong call. Get over that quick. I love losing because I learn so much from it. The reason I don't talk about my failures much is not because I’m hiding anything, but because once I’ve seen I’ve made a mistake, in my mind, it’s over.”
From Gary Vaynerchuk’s latest book, Crushing It.
Caveat: Of course, you don’t always have to be in do mode. You can want—and have—balance. The point is that when you are working, you are executing. Not pondering, pontificating. Doing. This one’s a necessary reminder for myself. I've wasted months and years debating, but I've never once regretted moving faster.
