Hoo boy, this is what I do when I'm worried
Oh, hi friends!
When I start to get anxious about something, it usually helps to remind myself of two things:
An hour/week/month ago, this thing probably didn’t exist, and didn’t worry me at all. Which means in an hour/week/month, this thing will be resolved and I’ll be on to the next.
I’ve made it through worse. This is almost always true (except for huge, catastrophic events) and there’s comfort in reminding myself of similar problems I’ve faced. Because if you’ve done it once, you can do it again.
I also pace ‘round my apartment and mindlessly eat snacks and sing Sondheim songs at the top of my lungs, but that’s probably less helpful.
So remember: This worry will be short-lived, and you’ve already seen the other side.
“I calculated once how many times I fell during my skating career — 41,600 times,” he said. “But here’s the funny thing: I got up 41,600 times. That’s the muscle you have to build in your psyche — the one that reminds you to just get up.”
Scott Hamilton wasn’t asked to be a commentator for figure skating at this year’s Olympics, but he doesn’t seem that bummed. “In the past 21 years, he has faced Stage 4 testicular cancer, followed by three brain tumors — one every six years since 2004. He’s living with a brain tumor right now.” This man is amazing.
My friend Jack Adams is the most soulful, talented musician I know. Check out his new song “Anyhow” and keep an eye on his Soundcloud for more to come.
