Chatting in airport bathrooms
Oh, hi friends!
I was in the Fresno airport yesterday, getting ready to fly back to New York.
I always visit the same bathroom. It’s what I do. ROUTINES ARE LIFE. Anyway.
At the sink was a woman putting on make-up.
She said, “Good morning!”
I said, “Good morning!”
Pause. Then I said, “And how are you?”
And five minutes later, I had made a new friend—she lives in Idaho, has a background in PR and marketing, and is pursuing her lifelong dream of being a tour guide. (I can tell she’ll be great at it.) She also has a teenage daughter who’s started her own social media business!
Making connections—and making travel tolerable—starts by saying, “And how are you?”
“So let’s say I get to a point with this project where I’m like, ‘This just isn’t working and I’m done.’ Well, I’ve still generated so much work that’s come from so much previous work and that’s connected to so much future work, it’s like ending a specific output is not a big deal. It’s all just material that’s being generated from one practice, from one journey.”
Yesss. Loved this interview with Peter Burr, an artist from Brooklyn specializing in animation and installation.
I try to think of work as a Medusa…there are snakes wriggling every which way. But they all connect back to one brain. Does this metaphor make any sense or just freak you out?
I know it was three whole days ago, but my favorite Super Bowl commercial was this Australian “Dundee” ad with Chris Hemsworth and Danny McBride—it was created by Droga5, the ad agency where I finished a 10-week academy where their genius creatives taught non-ad folks about advertising, copywriting, art direction, etc. They have the best senses of humor. (PS — I also rounded up all the Super Bowl travel commercials for The Points Guy. Dr. Oz, what are you doing here?!)
Do you like these daily emails? Please share with a friend!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
