Ha! Laughing in the face of plans
Oh, hi friends!
I was chatting with my friend Susannah Jones yesterday about setting intentions for the year.
It’s so easy to say, especially as someone who works for yourself, “Life will unfold. I can’t possibly make plans…”
It’s much scarier to admit: “I really want to accomplish these three things this year…”
What if they don’t happen?
Or, funny thing…what if they do?
In December, I said I’d be much more deliberate with big projects this year. Of course, one month later, I’m consumed by day-to-day living. That made me especially grateful for this conversation.
It was a necessary reminder to stop examining the bark on every tree and remember the bigger picture...we're walking through a forest.
“For several months, I kept a quote from the late photographer Richard Benson at the top of my Instagram feed: 'Go out into the world with the camera and photograph, and find out that the world is smarter than you are.' In other words, don’t complicate things with arty ideas or fancy tricks. Let inspiration come from what you see, not what you think.”

I don’t know how I missed his story “My Life as an Unlikely Instagram Addict” last year, but so many lessons to be learned from my keen-eyed friend Malcolm Jones, who has posted a picture a day on Instagram to get in the habit of taking photographs. The habit's stuck. PS — You really must follow him.
Here’s a Bunch of Brooklyn Businesses You Probably Didn’t Know Existed…
A beautiful bookmaker in Midwood! A seltzer delivery company in Canarise! A shop that gold-plates every Oscar in East Williamsburg! A handmade pasta shop in Park Slope! Puppet makers in Industry City!
I love my borough and was so glad to work on this story for The Bridge profiling 15 retro companies who are refreshingly going back-to-basics in this digital world. Long live analog. (Says someone who spends 12 hours a day on her laptop...)
