Do you ever want to write a book?
Oh, hi friends!
I was asked this weekend if I ever wanted to write a book.
Oh, I don’t know…I mean…I don’t know if I have the kind of brain that likes to tackle long-term projects…I don’t read much fiction anymore…I don’t, I don’t, I don’t…
Later I couldn’t help but wonder how much of my hesitation came from my actual beliefs and interest and desires…
…or the fact that I didn’t get into one (ONE!) creative writing class while studying English at UCLA, and basically wrote off that side of my brain forever.
Then I got to thinking about how deeply ingrained our beliefs about ourselves can be.
One stray comment 10 years ago can imprint on your psyche forever.
Heck, that’s how I pursued journalism instead of film, and became an editor instead of a writer, and took any number of left or right turns. One compliment…one closed door…a different choice.
No regrets, you know. It brought me here to you.
But when you hear yourself saying something like “I don’t do that,” or “I can’t do this,” or “I’m not good at that,” investigate the roots.
Are they grounded in what someone else told you—or are they the truth?
“Do you like something your partner did or said or made or wrote? Tell them! Effusively! ‘I love what you did here’ or ‘Wow, that’s so cool’ is such a wonderful thing to hear and yet so infrequently proffered. Everyone wants to feel appreciated, heard, and seen. Everyone wants to know that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.”
Valuable advice on The ABCs of Collaboration in this smart piece by Deborah Copaken. We should all compliment each other more. By the way, I love your shirt today. (h/t my Aunt Gina Cutruzzula!)
Patti LuPone at the 2018 Grammys. Bow down.
And here she is at the 1980 Grammys. Fuzzy version, but worth watching.
Now go attack your Tuesday. Make Patti proud.
