Pick a word, any word
Oh, hi friends!
Gretchen Rubin (of Better Than Before and Happier podcast fame) likes to pick a word to define her year—a slogan of sorts.
Maybe yours would be LOVE or HUSTLE or FREEDOM or DISCIPLINE or OPTIMISM. (Or PORG?)
Unlike a mantra, you won’t forget a single word, and it can help you decide between commitments. (i.e. “Will this assignment contribute to JOY or bring more chaos?”)
My friend Abby Reisner takes this one step further—she chooses a new word each month which sets her intentions. Brilliant. You can’t predict in January if you'll still need to HUSTLE in August. Maybe by then your word will be ICE CREAM.
I’m coming up with my own January word now. Will you?
PS — If I haven't already browbeat you into taking Gretchen’s Four Tendencies quiz, please do and learn if you’re an Upholder, Obliger, Questioner, or Rebel. Completely shifts how you deal with expectations!
How did you deal with creative blocks?
I just sat down and forced myself to write. I think for so many years I looked at writing as this thing like, “Oh, yeah, an idea comes to you and then you write.” Realizing, oh no, it’s not that. Writing is like any other job. You just do it. You get better at it as you go along.
My friend Erik Sutch self-financed, wrote, directed, and produced his first feature film Careful Not to Cry, about an abortion provider who drives a taxicab while waiting for her clinic to reopen. He was interviewed on The Creative Independent and I so appreciated the insight into his creative process.
What What Would Peggy Say?
I think OkCupid’s new ads are brilliant. The new campaign by Wieden + Kennedy New York was created by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. See many more over at Adweek.
