Why I don't care about your resolutions—or mine
Oh, hi friends!
Are you setting your resolutions and unwrapping fresh calendars and plotting big dreams to make 2018 the year [X] finally happens?
Me too.
And I’m excited for us both.
But I’m also asking myself one question over and over again.
How?
You want to feel healthy. How? Work out. How? Schedule gym time on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays. How? Pick a set hour and stick to it. How? Sign up for a class. How? Get an accountability partner to text every day on your way to the gym. How? Decide.
You want to write a screenplay. How? Open up a blank document. How? Read Save the Cat. How? Write two crappy pages a day. How? Buy Final Draft. How? Join a writer’s group. How? Tell your friends what you’re doing. How? Read scripts online. How? Write.
You want to get a new job. How? Tell people you’re looking. How? Meet new people in your industry. How? Bring them value. How? Make yourself an expert. How? Apply to a job posting with the most incredible cover letter or portfolio they’ve ever seen. How? Search.
The secret to turning vague resolutions into solid actions is in the specifics. I don’t care about your resolutions or mine. I care about our plans.
So what do you want to do?
And most importantly, how will you do it?
“My best is enough.”
Katrín Davíðsdóttir is a women’s CrossFit champion, but just a few years ago, she failed to even quality for the CrossFit Games. So she overhauled the way she trained, competed, and performed—then she dominated. The 24-year-old’s short interview on Tim Ferriss’s new podcast Tribe of Mentors is worth a listen, but her quote above stuck with me.
What if you actually believed your best was enough?
That if you kept doing your absolute best—nothing more, nothing less—everything would fall into place?
That's a pretty good incentive to keep trying.
My talented friend Carl Zurhorst (who I met when he starred in my play Strangers in the Night!) wrote and directed this gorgeous music video for the band Fort Vine. Enjoy “On Holiday” and keep those cheery vacation vibes going all week long.
