Getting a job you actually want
Oh, hi friends!
Maybe you’re looking for a new job. Maybe you know someone who is. Maybe you don’t know where to start.
Instead of refreshing indeed.com, because that's not good for your sanity, here are some other unconventional suggestions:
— Figure out the places you want to work.
— Start telling people you want to work there.
— Follow people who work there on Twitter. Pay attention to what they’re saying.
— Guess someone’s email address (it’s not hard) and cold email them. Don’t ask for a job — deliver them something of value. Do this 100 times. (To different people. Not the same person.)
— Make yourself an expert on a topic. Share your expertise. People like to employ experts.
— Be nice to everyone.
— Email people when they get laid off (or get a new job). Because it's nice, but also because you can ask them later what it's like to work there.
— Say hi to everyone. I don’t care if you don’t work with the production team, say hi to them anyway.
— Have a presence on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, whatever. Not because you love the face filters, but because being on people’s minds is important.
— Go do social things! Jobs don’t hire people. People hire people. So go meet people.
— Did I mention be nice to everyone?
That’s it for now. Got any tips of your own? I’d love to hear them.
How do you define success?
Fame, fortune, a townhouse, a job well done, the ability to afford a high-quality brunch every weekend? You need to know where you're aiming. Something to think about.
All the Goods Fit to Give
I’m going to try really, really hard this year to not order all my Christmas gifts off Amazon. That didn’t work out great last year anyway—I accidentally delivered them all to Brooklyn, instead of my hometown in California. Whoops. (Don't worry, my mom still got her cat blanket.) Anyway, I loved this gift guide at The Bridge of 100% Brooklyn-made goods. Mom, see anything you like?
