Warm and cozy blanket rules
Oh, hi friends!
Do you have a task that always makes you waffle? (Mmm...waffles...)
Maybe a blanket rule is in order. At least it’ll help you smother your indecision to death?
Here are a few I’m playing with:
— Foam roll after every run. (Even if I only have five minutes.)
— Pretend every story I have to write is due at 10 a.m. (Instead of “end of day” or another vague time.)
— Transcribe interviews right after they're over. (I realized the biggest lag in getting my stories published comes from sitting on a transcription for days…weeks…years...lifetimes.)
— Don't go to bed with a sink full of dishes. (Because if I do, I wake up the next day in a foul mood—no exceptions. It’s actually kinda scary?)
They seem arbitrary and small, but help create order from (inevitable) chaos.
Got any good ones?
“I like trying to do things I’ve never done before, that I don’t know how to do. That’s when it’s exciting, because you don’t know whether it’s going to work or not.”
Spike Jonze wrote and directed a dance piece starring Mia Wasikowska and Lakeith Stanfield at La MaMa. As one does.
Luke & Lorelai Forever
A bit of fun news—and a lesson: My Gilmore Girls spec script is a Second Rounder in the Austin Film Festival! (That means it placed in the top 20%.)
After the revival was announced in 2016, I wrote the script in a four-day whirlwind: what I thought would happen at Richard’s funeral, what Rory would be up to as she turned 30, Kirk’s latest dumb shenanigans.
Then it was disqualified from last year’s competition because the show hadn’t returned yet to Netflix. So I filed it away. Waited an entire year. And submitted it again.
This was what they call a "teachable moment." Things don’t always happen the way you think they will. (Btw, in my episode, Rory tries to get a book deal to write about President Clinton, so…)
Here’s the full list of semi-finalists and second rounders, and if you want to read my episode, called “Four Gilmores and a Funeral,” why, it’s right here!
