A wee nugget of career advice
Oh, hi friends!
There’s an old piece of career advice that goes, “Look at the person above you—do you want their job?”
If you do, great! Learn from them. You’ll usurp them soon.
If not, why? And can you find a company where that statement might be true?
I ran into Erik Sutch on the street the other night and he mentioned this site The Creative Independent featuring interviews with artists of all disciplines. They want to be "a resource of emotional and practical guidance for creative people." Kara catnip!!! This quote comes from poet and writer Sally Wen Mao.
Here's a Story You Should Read
My friend Nina Semczuk writes beautifully in The War Horse about interviewing for jobs after her time in the Army—an eye-opening perspective on how life experiences can (or can’t) prepare you for what’s next.
“At 23, I had 25 soldiers to keep alive, six specialized trucks to employ for intelligence collection and analysis, and less than 15 months of active duty experience, six of which were spent in officer training. Did this count as “dynamic”? I wondered, picturing the job description I had memorized before the interview.”
Finish the story here.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
