Are you running for days—or weeks?
Oh, hi friends!
Many people compare writing and running—both require practice, patience, strong calves.
(What, you don’t write with your feet?)
They also require training.
I’ve gone through phases where I wanted to run a certain number of miles every day. Three, six, zero, etc. But then something would crop up: rain, an unexpected interview, an alarm clock fail. Instead of six miles, I’d do three. And instead of being glad I ran those three, I’d consider that run a failure.
Think about how insane that sounds.
A year or two ago, I changed tactics. I set a goal to run a certain number of miles every week. If one run went off track, it still counted. I could make up the miles elsewhere. And giving myself that small gift of flexibility was everything.
That’s why setting a daily writing or creative goal is equally tricky. You miss one day and you’re failing. But track your weekly—or even monthly—output, and you might be surprised by what you can accomplish.
Hi, I'm Kara, and I eat rejection for breakfast.
I think we could all gain perspective by being more transparent with our rejections and our failures. Here are a few of my recent ones. Got any to share?
A New Play You Should See
I’m excited to share that my friends Chelsea Smith and Randa Karambelas are producing and starring in A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro. The play spans 20 years and follows six young military and civilian women who served their country in Vietnam. It’s running from September 7-30 down at IATI Theater. I urge you to support this important work of art! Tickets here.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
