Breaking patterns
Oh, hi friends!
I used to go to a lot of meetings. Writers and editors would file into the impressive glass conference room and sit around the impressive gleaming table.
When I was an intern, I didn’t feel comfortable taking a chair, so I’d linger on the fringes. When I was a homepage editor, I did the same thing. I stood on the side. When I was a features editor…same thing. Editor at the magazine…same thing. Sure, sometimes I’d sit, but I always thought: What are you doing? You still belong by the windows, pressed against the glass, watching the others work.
That’s the power of a pattern. You keep doing what you’ve always done, because that’s what is expected of you. Actually, that’s what you allow others to expect from you.
But patterns can easily be broken. You can sit down, or stand up, or speak out, or define your role and your relationships at any time. It doesn’t matter how you’ve been seen in the past. How do you want to be seen today?
SHIPPING BEATS PERFECTION.
YEAH, going with the super shout-y all CAPS for this one. What can you ship today? Tomorrow? And will you?
There’s more to him than Dumb and Dumber. This six-minute documentary about Jim Carrey and his paintings is mesmerizing. (h/t brother + Jeffries)
Thank you for reading.
