This calls for a celebration
Oh, hi friends!
Today is my New York-iversary.
Nine years feels long. I don’t know that I could recognize my 21-year-old self.
Nine years feels short. I can still feel my heartbeat on the plane ride over from California.
I tend to focus on the future. (Oh rly, Kara? I hadn’t noticed, ya crazy fool…) That mindset doesn’t leave a lot of room for nostalgia, but I’m glad to know that scattered among many laptops, blogs, digital journals, and scribbled notebooks, I have memories from much of those nine years. (The very definition of fodder! I've got stories for decades!)
The funny thing is that most of my New York-iversary posts probably sound exactly the same as this one. The years feel long, she writes. And so short!
In that way, I guess I can recognize the version of myself that showed up here on July 12, 2008. No one completely changes. We can only hope to get a little smarter (or less naive) or kinder (or less cruel) or more connected (or less isolated) with every anniversary.
So, thank you for connecting with me. Wherever you may be, knowing that you're reading makes this my best New York-iversary yet.
PS — Happy birthday, Marissa!!!
I loved this piece by Nina Semczuk about why it’s essential to uncover what truly makes you happy. So much truth here.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
