Good reads to get you to 5 p.m.
Oh, hi friends!
You’re on a plane right now. Or driving. Or sitting in an office or your home thinking about how you’ll be in a plane or driving soon. Or perhaps you’re happy you’re not doing any of those things because you like when everyone flees to the beach and the city becomes yours. (*raises hand*)
Whatever it is you’re doing—or not doing—over the long weekend, I hope you do it deliberately and enjoy it. If you don’t have plans, make some. (I will.) If you do and they make you chafe, cancel them. (I will.) If you want to spend five hours on Sunday writing or watching Master of None or seeing plays or hopscotching down the sidewalk or hanging in the park with your kids, do.
Do do do. More more more. (Or less less less!)
See you Tuesday.
“It’s nice to do something not related to anything else.”
My friend said this the other day about taking photographs. They’re not for a project or assignment or for pay or anything but his own enjoyment. And I thought: doesn’t that sound nice? Isn’t that what people used to call…a hobby?!
Things I Read and Liked and Want You to Read and Like Too
Welcome to the future: Amazon’s new bookstore has signs like “4.8 Stars & Above” and “Books Kindle Readers Finish in 3 Days or Less.” Some might hate this but in my opinion it's so much more democratic (and relatable) to customers than generalized “Best Seller” or “New Release” sections.
Two runners meet during a race—and years later get married during the Brooklyn half-marathon. Cutest Vows column. (h/t Brandon)
“You have not lived until you’ve heard Meryl Streep narrate how to make the perfect four-minute egg.” In which I tried out food-related audiobooks to find my inner Julia Child for Audible Range.
Allison McNearney spent 48 hours with innovative designer Iris van Herpen for this wonderful story for T.
"What you're seeing with Maggie Haberman is, you're watching one of the greatest people to ever do this job, giving a maximum effort.” Breaking my no-news mantra to direct you to this profile of the brilliant NYT reporter, who appears to out-work everyone else.
Thank you for reading.
