All of your best ideas.
Oh, hi friends!
What sparks your best ideas?
Connections, things you see lying in the street, smart lunches, dumb conversations, that squirrel with the weird orange tail, hormones, hardwiring, nature, nurture, nunchucks you had when you were six years old?
It’s impossible to know.
That’s why “where do your ideas come from?” is such a non-starter. It’s like asking “how many breaths did you take today?” You know they happened, but you can’t possibly go backwards and count. (Unless you're starring in About Time, in which case, congratulations because that's the best time travel movie of all...time.)
I guess that's why we always have to be on the lookout for our best ideas. And maybe while we’re waiting, between breaths, they'll show up. Then all we can do is write them down, again and again and again.
"I could not have written a novel if I hadn't been a journalist first, because it taught me that there's no muse that's going to come down and bestow upon you the mood to write. You just have to do it. I'm definitely not precious.”
Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn talking candidly about being a journalist-turned-novelist. I like this. A lot. (h/t Selina)
The Timeless Torches are a group of over-40 (and many over 60) dancers for the WNBA's Liberty team, and this three-minute video is worth your time. Wish we all had this much joy. Click image to watch; couldn't figure out how to embed! (h/t Abby)
Thank you for reading.
