Monday sponge-day
Oh, hi friends!
The other day I was trying to write a “humorous” essay, which came out dry as dirt. Then I realized I’ve been reading non-fiction business books and, like, very earnest things for the last six months. One can die alone but one cannot be witty alone. See, I don't even know if that's funny because I haven't been reading funny stuff for ages?!
So on this brand-new, fresh-start, shiny-and-glossy Monday, take a broad look around—what are you absorbing? Because we pattern ourselves after others, consciously or not.
If your goal right now is to run a race, try following inspiring runners on Instagram instead of meme accounts. If you want to launch a business, read Entrepreneur in the morning instead of your grandma's friend's Facebook post (you can read that in the afternoon). If you want to build apps, ditch the travel accounts. Just for now. You can recalibrate later.
Audit what you’re spongeing up. It might matter more than you think.
“Love is love is love is love.”
This phrase was repeated a few times this weekend at my dear friend Danielle’s wedding, a joyous event for two joyful people. Made me revisit Lin Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award speech, which might be the best 55 seconds of your day.
The Rise of the Designer as Life Coach
I wrote a story for Magenta about how graphic designers and illustrators who focus their work on meaning and motivation are finding broad audiences—and I got to talk to the very talented @AdamJK, @TimothyGoodman, and @MerelyMeeraLee. Definitely recommend following them on Instagram—and you can find out how they each found their niche in my story riiiight over here.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
