Today's Brass Ring Daily: Bored? Doodle Your Way Out
Compliments from Your Enemy
Imagine someone who you don’t like very much.
Now imagine they gave you a compliment. Maybe they say you’re a great writer or have amazing hair or excellent taste in summer concerts. Maybe it's the best compliment of your life.
Next summon all of your powers and think of a compliment to give them.
Now do you hate them a little less?
Weird little trick, right?
All you did was tell yourself a new narrative. One in which you liked one small thing about each other.
"You don’t come to live here unless the delusion of a reality shaped around your own desires isn’t a strong aspect of your personality. ‘A reality shaped around your own desires’—there is something sociopathic in that ambition."
Only Zadie Smith could transition from looking outside at a giant billboard to musing about the all-consuming allure of New York. Thanks to Sujay for reminding me of her excellent piece, “Find Your Beach.”
Simple, Small, Goofy
If you get stuck on anything today, take out a pen or pencil or crayon (oooh, now I want Crayolas!!!) and start doodling. Maybe you’ll get unstuck.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
