Today's Brass Ring Daily: Oh, So, Simple *Is* Better?
The Reading Quandary
In January, I set a reading challenge on Goodreads to finish 76 books in 2017. Why 76? Because the most voracious reader I know set their goal at 75 and I am a straight-up savage monster.
But reading during the day feels like a luxury (why am I not writing or interviewing or researching something? #nochill) and reading before bed only results in me falling asleep with the light on and my pupils burning when I wake up.
Then, a breakthrough! Now I’m leaving books literally cracked open around my apartment, ready to be read. Rather than scrolling Instagram while waiting for water to boil, I get through a few pages in the kitchen. This might not get me to 76 books (I’m at 12—embarrassing), but I feel like I’m making progress.
What’s something you want to do that just needs to be made…simple?
Quiara Alegría Hudes won a Pulitzer Prize and wrote the book for In the Heights. So, yes, I will listen to her.
"Everyone's a Critic on St. Felix Street"
I’ve been collecting overheard dialogue and conversations with strangers for years. Usually they wind up in my plays and screenplays; this is the first time one of them made the New York Times. (!!!) My first Grey Lady byline is in today’s Metropolitan Diary, detailing a humorous run-in on a recent morning. My lesson from this one is: submit everything, everywhere, always. Read my very (very) short story here.
Thank you for reading.
Love, Kara
