I’m talking about when you’re chatting with a client, or are in a meeting, or are REALLY. EXCITED. ABOUT. SOMETHING.
Do you zoom from zero to 120? Cruise at 60 all day? If so, can you turn it up to 90? What's that look like?
I should stop with the driving metaphors because I haven’t been behind the wheel of a car in 10 years and don't even remember which side the brake is on.
But. BUT. Sometimes it's easier to think about abstract things like, oh, emotions or work quality or your level of hustle if you attach a number.
And if you find yourself maintaining a certain speed, ask yourself: Is this really the fastest I can go?

I found this in my Evernote notebook titled “Quotes and Characters." It’s from August 2014. Wish I knew where I overheard it…but actually, it works for almost anything.
I admire the writer Ta-Nehisi Coates for many reasons, but now I have a new one: his brilliant and honest advice on writing and finding a creative breakthrough.
