What hard work looks like when you love what you do
Are You The Walking Dead?
I've noticed there are two modes for getting through the day: switched off or turned on. Switched off, of course, is the zombie feeling: cloudy head, closed off, 100% distracted. Turned on is the opposite: open mind, open heart, 100% present. You easily strike up conversations with strangers and smile at dogs on the street. Pay attention to what tips you in either direction (weather? work? a tense conversation? exercise? waking up on the wrong side of the bed?) because a world where we're all Walking Alive sounds much nicer than the alternative.
This is what hard work looks like when you love what you do. From The New York Times story “This Maestro Is Turning 90. He’s Also Conducting Over 90 Concerts This Year” about the unstoppable Swedish dynamo Herbert Blomstedt. Read here.
A Little Trick for When Your Computer Freezes
I was in the middle of writing a monologue and my laptop froze. I accepted that I had to Force Quit, but was frustrated to lose so many unsaved lines. To ease the pain, I hit Command + Shift + 3, which screencaps the entire screen, so at least whatever I was looking at would be saved. (Bonus: Command + Shift + 4 screencaps any specific area of the sceen you want.) The image saves to your desktop — a small consolation after a frustrating meltdown.
Thank you for reading.
