How to Stay Grounded
“A day without [BLANK] doesn’t feel quite right.”
How do you fill that [BLANK]? It’s telling. That’s your anchor. The thing that rights your ship. Running, yoga, calling home, your 6 a.m. wake-up, your 3 p.m. coffee, clearing out your brain with a good show or book. Whether you work in an office or work from home, you have to define your own anchors and commit to them. They’re what make days feel finished.
CHARLIE ROSE: What is it that you, Mike Nichols, want to do?
MIKE NICHOLS: I’m not certain because it changes so much, but I think what I really want to do is all get together — you and me and the cameraman and the audience — and examine our lives, right now, and what’s led up to them, right now, and see if there isn’t something better. If we can’t learn something from it, if we can’t express something of ourselves, that will help us…go on.
This is my favorite description ever of the role theater — or writing, or art, or any form of making — plays in our lives. Watch the 1992 interview with the legendary film and theater director, producer, actor and comedian here.
