How to Focus on Long Projects When You’ve Got Short-Term Deadlines?
Step One: Ask yourself, “Why?” So, why do you care about tackling this behemoth? If you find the reason, write it down on a scrap of paper, scrunch it into a ball, and slowly eat it. Just kidding. But do write it down. And if you can’t find “why”? Drop that project. Move on.
Step Two: Find your “Next Action.” (I stole this from Getting Things Done.) This is the smallest possible step that moves a project forward. Make a word-vomit list. Gather notes. Call someone. Answer one email. Buy a domain name. Tiny little baby steps. When you finish that action, find the next one. If you get stuck, remember your Why. Repeat until complete.
"No one asked you to be happy. Get to work."
Tough love Friday! This quote is attributed to Colette. From her obit in the New York Times: “France's leading woman writer was born on Jan. 28, 1873, in the village of Saint-Sauver-en-Puisaye in Burgundy. Her father, a retired Army officer, was a frustrated politician. When his daughter was 6 years old, he permitted her to try to match him, wine glass for wine glass, as he stumped local cafes for votes.”
