Working from home? I got you
Oh, hi friends!
Are you working from home?
(“Working” might have a loose interpretation these days, but humor me.)
I’ve worked from home off and on since 2013. I used to be terrible at it. Now I am less terrible! Here are three things that helped me get better.
Officially “starting” my day.
Maybe you love sleeping in late or having cereal in bed. Do that now! But if/when you want to attempt some work — start your day with something. Shower, put on makeup, play a song. Tell yourself “the day is starting now.” Try not to segue straight from bed to computer.
Ticking off one thing at a time.
Look, I’m not one to talk. It’s hard to do anything. But every day I’ve tried to focus on doing ONE thing that reminds me of my goals. Even doing one thing at home with so many distractions is challenging, so here’s how I’m doing it: Move phone far away. Pretend it’s napping. Open document or email or whatever you need to do. Close all other tabs. Only do that one thing until it’s finished. That’s it. One thing always makes me feel better. (That one thing could be arranging your pantry, too! Anything!)
Picking up a new habit.
I eat sunflower seeds like a freak when I’m at home. I like to think it focuses any nervous energy, but really it probably increases my sodium content to an unhealthy level. Oh well! Maybe you start watching a new TV show during lunch or begin doing yoga through YouTube or text five people in your life every afternoon. Try stuff!
If I can help in any other way, please let me know. I'm here for you.
Anything you do today is an accomplishment — remember that.
“A piece about a ‘heavy' subject can be written a little bit light so the piece doesn’t seem quite as heavy. You’ve mainly got to trust yourself to write the way you feel about something.”
I can always use the advice of 32-year-old Nora Ephron.
Write the way you feel.
Oh. My. Gosh. He's beautiful!!!!
