I love a rejection
Oh, hi friends!
What would happen if you loved your rejections?
Yesterday I got a notice that my film script didn’t progress in a competition.
It was a tiny flicker of disappointment. I wasn’t totally heartbroken; in fact, it made me remember that I almost didn’t submit. The application was closing in five minutes when I clicked “send.”
But after the rejection, I responded and said something like, ‘Thanks for telling us when you said you would, and thank you for the opportunity — it reminds me what I want.’
And then, after I sent that, even the tiny flicker of disappointment was gone.
What would happen if you loved your rejections?
“Entertain all your far-out ideas.”
The playwright Suzan-Lori Parks said this on the podcast What It Takes. (I love this podcast for its simplicity — they’re interviews with visionaries and leaders in art, science, technology, public service, sports, and business.)
By "entertain your ideas” she means treat them as though they are guests in your apartment. Welcome them in. See what they need. They might tell you something.
Listen to the podcast here, which also includes an interview with Lynn Nottage!
I’m sure I mentioned it before, but I want to give another shoutout to Canva, which is basically like a foolproof Photoshop. I’ve made YouTube covers, lookbooks, single art, and a bunch of other stuff with this site and app.
Yesterday I even made Instagram icons! (Btw, I’m @karacut — follow me pls for high-quality productivity content and also Porg cameos!) There’s a template for everything! If you need to pull together a presentation or give one of your projects a nice debut, check it out. Also, I realize now this looks like an ad but I don't do that sort of thing, I just really like it!

Thanks, as always, for reading.
