I didn’t know you did that?
Oh, hi friends!
Do people know what you do? Everything you do?
I ask because of a few interesting conversations I’ve had lately.
One of my editors asked me, “Are you an editor, too?” Apparently, the way I was talking about my upcoming piece — how we could frame and shape it — made me sound like an editor. “Yes,” I said. “I am.” There wasn’t any reason for him to know this — in our dealings, I write and he edits. But now it seems like helpful information.
A friend who’s a composer revealed during a roundtable conversation that he’s passionate about sharing his work on social media and video, and he thinks other people should share their work, too. I pretty much accosted him in the elevator to say, I CARE ABOUT THAT, TOO. LET’S TALK ABOUT IT. I wouldn’t have known about his interest in where and how creators present and market their work. But now I know we have that in common.
I’m also thinking of when I was working at MONEY, and how my favorite copy editors, Maria and Lauren, always loved chatting about theater. I was working there as an editor, but they knew about my songs and projects and that I was running off to my musical theater workshop on Tuesday nights. It was nice, being known like that.
Sometimes it’s easier to stay in our lanes. To be known as This or That. But I wonder how many opportunities we close off when we don’t share those other parts of ourselves.
Instead of picking a lane, why not drive the highway?
It’s good to have a sense of humor about these things.
(Sidenote: Manifestation is totally real.)
When You Make a Pact
Busy week! Ron and I presented two songs from our adaptation of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in the workshop on Tuesday.
In late January, we decided to try and present an extra song to get more feedback and move along our project. Usually six groups present every week — and the projects are amazing, folks are adapting and turning into musicals everything from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Short Term 12 to Zombieland and Hay Fever.
Turns out there was an extra presentation slot yesterday. And because we made that pact, we actually had another song ready to go!
So here they are…
Our dear and cranky Susie Myerson (Julia Gannon) tries to convince Midge (Caitlin Collins) she should do stand-up in a big ol’ number called “You Got the Goods."
And our dear and confused Joel Maisel (Maxwell Beer) gives Midge the hard sell on giving it another go after he cheated on her in “Flying to the Moon.”
We hope you enjoy these works-in-progress!! Thank you for your support.
