The bus was driving me insane
Oh, hi friends!
When you work from home, there are fewer but different distractions.
No Slack notifications, but there's a bookshelf stuffed with plays and books.
No 10-minute walk to the coffee machine, but there's an overly complicated French press.
No office bustle, but there's an incredibly loud school bus that idles outside my window every day at 3pm.
Except idling is the wrong word. It roars.
The first few days, I grumbled. Then I found my noise-canceling headphones. Then I realized idling trucks are illegal and horrible for the environment, so I looked up how to report it. Finally, I mentioned it to my friend Fam, the owner of my building and a woman who gets things done.
The next day, I looked out the window — there was the truck. But its engine was off, quiet as can be.
I asked Fam how it happened.
She said she figured out how to file a complaint, but then one afternoon simply walked outside, went to the driver’s window, and asked if he might be able to turn off his engine because it’s very loud and we live right across the street.
He said of course, he didn’t know it was a bother.
It’s been silent ever since.
I guess sometimes the easiest solution is the most direct one.
I was so excited to see Hildur Guðnadóttir win Best Original Score at the Oscars for her work on Joker. After a crazy busy awards season, she’s now only a Tony Award away from an EGOT!
